…in theory you can drive an unlimited number (of NeoPixels) from your microcontroller, in practice, the more you try to connect, the more problems you’re going to have. The Scorpio is designed to solve a few of these issues.
In addition to the LEDs, there’s a lot of GPIO pins for other hardware. There are 21 3 V GPIOs (in addition to the eight 5 V LED GPIOs), two of which are also on a STEMMA QT / Qwiic connector that makes it easy to add on peripherals.
