Mixing 3D Printing + Fungi for Experimental Building Materials #3dPrinting
Architecture firm PLP have been experimenting with new ways to combine 3D printing with fungi to create novel building materials.
After lots of iterating, the team found that printing molds with wood-based PLA and filling them with mycelium bio-composites was a very environmentally friendly way to create custom-shaped sound proofing and building insulation that’s not only lightweight, but also fire-resistant.
This method is obviously not super practical in its current form, but there’s something cool about environmentally friendly, ‘living’ materials like these.
