Have you ever been on your at some super old-timey manor house or castle? And you pass by a harpsichord or lute or some other musical instrument that just doesn’t exist anymore? And maybe someone sits down in front of that harpsichord and plays Bach, and it’s amazing to hear a music that seems to be coming from the distant past? Terry Riley’s In C, from 1964, is one of the most popular works of musical minimalism. The piece is for ensembles of any size, and consists of 53 musical phrases, ranging from half a beat to 32 beats, that you can play any number of times, but you try to stay within 2 or 3 phrases of the other musicians in the group.
