Meet the Makers: Patrick Ball from Camp Jobi with “Field of Flowers” at Autumn Lights Festival 2023 in Oakland, CA
Autumn Lights Festival is one of the Bay Area’s favorite fall traditions. Every year around 100 LED light artists put up their art at the Gardens at Lake Merritt to raise funds for this amazing public space. The garden is a beautiful hideaway and a respite from the hustle and bustle of downtown Oakland. Its placement right on Lake Merritt adds a peaceful and beautiful public space for Bay Area folks to relax. It’s got a long and storied history, and the Autumn Lights Festival keeps this lovely place front and center in the public eye.
There were so many amazing art pieces here this year. One of my favorites was “Field of Flowers” by Patrick Ball and Camp Jobi. Over 100 flowers filled a whole corner of the garden. Visitors could stroll through and experience waves of light, color, and sound moving throughout the garden. It is a very lovely piece.
I caught up with Patrick Ball and asked him a few questions about his exhibit. The flowers run on ESP32 boards and use the FastLED arduino library to communicate with one another. I loved hearing the sounds bounce around me through the garden.
Have an amazing project to share? The Electronics Show and Tell is every Wednesday at 7:30pm ET! To join, head over to YouTube and check out the show’s live chat and our Discord!
