Finding optimal stacking values in placing 2D graphics @jasmcole
If you are drawing objects in 2D space, you still need to think of a third axis, Z, as items will stack on top of one another. The Almost Looks Like Work Blog says:
When adding objects or updating their stacking order, it’s nice to be able to only update the object itself, and not the (potentially thousands) of other objects around it. Therefore we need a strategy to pick new z-indices for new objects that won’t conflict with other ones.
You shouldn’t just pick arbitrary Z values, it could lead to lots of clumping:
This is not just mathematically unsatisfactory, it’s just plain rude to have our objects crammed together when they don’t need to be – surely there’s a better solution?
