While NaCl is the go-to its not the only game in town. The salt spread over the sidewalks and streets causes a freezing point depression, but it also causes corrosion, hurts pet’s feet, tears up my winter boots and a slew of other environmental problems.
Other, less caustic de-icing solutions can also create freezing point depression. One of them is even being beet juice! Learn all about it from the SciShow:
