Comparing Pliers Wrenches to Actual Wrenches

How on earth have I never known about the Torque Test Channel? Similar to Project Farm, they comparison-test all sorts of power and hand tools.

In this video, they compare Knipex pliers wrenches against flare nut wrenches. They look at two Knipex pliers (Knipex Cobra and Knipex Pliers Wrench) and compare them against the performance of a Gearwrench flare nut wrench.

And the winner is…? A $26 Amazon Basics 3-pliers set? Pretty much. The shocker in this test is that, just for fun, they also introduce a 3-piece Amazon pliers set that is meant to be a clone of the $35 Knipex Cobra. That’s three pliers, so under $9 each. They find that the Amazon Basics performed surprisingly well and are perfect for light, periodic use. I immediately ordered a set.

  1. I like these comparison videos as they give actual data to comparison.

I’d note that this is one data point. It looked like the amazon basics was adjusted better than the other wrenches used incorrectly. The constant disclaimer was also off-putting.
The use of a cheater pipe seemed weird and not normal for this tool.
It also seems strange to compare these tools together.

I’ve seen people who think a tool is terrible but it turns out they were using it incorrectly the whole time. I think that might be the case here.

The basics maybe a fine tool tool but it is hard to tell from this video. It is definitely an inexpensive tool. It is likely "good enough" for a lot of situations… but so are tools from IKEA. But does this video actually clarify anything? I’m not too sure about that.
The test isn’t really valid if they are not using the tool properly or typically.

Project Farm videos are much higher quality in terms of number of comparison, types of comparisons and attention to detail. I wouldn’t say they are perfect but they do give you data that is not as questionable.
