Adding dial-up to a desktop ISP #VintageComputing #Modem #Telephony
A YouTube channel called SerialPort has been doing a series about how old school dial up ISPs used to work. This got Ben thinking if he could add dial up access to his Desktop ISP.
I ended up ordering 2 of these modern USB modems from Amazon. This made sense as at least one of the devices will end up plugged into the Raspberry Pi 3B+ that acts as my ISP access point.
A terminal application handles listening to the serial port the modem is connecting to and answering when it rings. Raspberry Pi OS, which I’m using on my ISP machines, comes with an number of different terminal applications, but there is a specific one called mgetty where the m stands for modem.
You can check out the different ways things can be connected in the post here.
