The facelesstech blog looks to 3D print in atomic purple.
After having a look around I couldn’t find the right colour. Fast forward to last week and my brain decided it was time to try and make atomic purple.
I found this awesome blog post on dyeing PLA, My first thought about dyeing PLA was that you were going to be dyeing the finish part but as I learnt it’s easier to dye the filament before printing with it. They suggested using Rit DyeMore branded dye, I found some royal purple colour on Amazon.
I put 7.5ml in 900ml of water and boiled for 5 minutes, Let it cool to 60 degrees C and let the filament sit for 30 minutes, After the 30 minutes I noticed that the mixture had dropped to 40 degrees C so I removed the filament and reheated the mixture back up to 60 degrees C then popped the filament back in and let it sit for 25 minutes. As soon as I pulled it out I could see it looked a lot closer to atomic purple, Let it dry and then printed it.
