Data Logging Armor for Live Action Role Playing Games #WearableWednesday

Maybe you like to LARP. Maybe you don’t know what LARPing is. Maybe when you find out LARP stands for Live Action Role-Playing Game that sounds pretty cool, and you’re already planning to make a foam sword and plastic elf-ears and wondering just how you can create data logging armor. This project is about solving one of the more challenging issues that comes up in LARP. It can be hard to know when you’ve been hit and moreso how often. It can be a way to keep score or just add more drama through lighting effects to a scene.

I decided to make this because it seemed like a rather interesting project. One that played well with my existing interests while building greatly on my knowledge and skills. In truth I did choose it in part because it would be a challenge. There is a lot of work going into handmaking armor and I have had the opportunity to learn a great deal more about electronics and programming to the get the ‘smart’ part of the project to work. I also did it for the fun. There is a certain joy in working on something like this. Hopefully I get the chance to build on it a bit further and take it out into the field to see how it plays in actual LARPS or how much people might appreciate it at a convention.
