For whatever reason, human beings love to talk about eye color. It’s one of the first observations made about a newborn baby, alongside height, weight, and hair (or lack thereof). It’s a body part people feel comfortable commenting on throughout your life. You even have to declare it on your various forms of government issued IDs! It’s kind of the bread and butter of your physical identity, which is why it can be a bit destabilizing when it changes on you. My eyes were light blue with small flecks of yellow up until my late teens, when they started to turn green, which they now have been for many years. Whenever anyone asks me where my daughter’s very light blue eyes come from, I feel like they think I’m lying when I say they come from me! This video from SciShow explains that while eye color generally settles by the age of 6, eye color can continue to change past that age for about 10-15% of the population, likely due to genetics.
