This summer has been unbearably hot in New York. June was basically August, July is bright, buggy, and blistering and I’m already sweating thinking about what August has in store. You either have to take shelter in AC or find a way to cool off. New Yorkers have always been creative in this regard so much so that it’s nearly impossible to conjure an image of summertime in the city without kids gallivanting in the street in front of a bursting fire hydrant. Ephemeral New York posted about this lovely New York tradition back in 2018. Fire hydrants aren’t just emblems of urban summertime nostalgia, they’re also interesting from an engineering perspective. This 2018 video from Concerning Reality on YouTube does a great job of explaining the technical aspects of fire hydrants, some of which are pretty cool.
