What’s the Matter With Dark Matter? #SpaceSaturday
The universe might keep expanding until it ends in what astrophysics call “the big rip.” Or the universe might keep expanding forever. Or the universe might slow down and collapse, in what astrophysicists call “the big crunch.” Astrophysicists aren’t sure just what the fate of the cosmos will be because they aren’t certain what is causing the expansion, although they do have a name for it: dark energy. A world of theory has developed from the idea of dark energy. That world of theory has been shaken to its foundation by recent revelatopns from the James Webb Space Telescope. Here’s more from Space:
A group of astronomers analyzing data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) say some of the oldest galaxies in our universe appear much larger and brighter than expected, suggesting they formed early and grew rapidly — potentially without the influence of dark matter.

“The expectation was that every big galaxy we see in the nearby universe would have started from these itty-bitty pieces,” Stacy McGaugh, who is an astrophysicist at the Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, said in a statement. “What the theory of dark matter predicted is not what we see.
