This recent video from Practical Engineering sings the praises of the humble base plate. The video operates from the angle that base plates are key to understanding most of the basic structures that we see, use, and occupy. The concept may sound obvious but there really are some great insights and animations here!
Baseplates are the structural shoreline of the built environment: where superstructure meets substructure. And even understanding just a little bit of the engineering behind them can tell you a lot of interesting things about the structures you see in your everyday life.
The video gives a few great examples of base plates that don’t have the benefit of the compressive load (signs and billboards, for instance). That had us thinking about one of our favorite base plate options – the Lego base plate.
