What Runs Doom? Day 4 – the Playdate #DailyDoom #Doommas

In December, Adafruit will showcase hardware that runs the vintage game Doom, with a special emphasis on things you would not expect could run the popular game.

Today we feature Doom on the Playdate gaming device.

In 2020, Nic Magnier came up with the first proof of concept for Doom on the black and white Playdate.

By 2022, the game was in the Playdate library. Images appear dithered to get a better sense of depth given the black and white display.

In 2023 Nic was looking at PureDOOM.

The latest in 2024 is by CherryV on the Playdate dev forum:

I’ve compiled code from GitHub – spazzylemons/playdoom: Doom port to Playdate based on Chocolate Doom repository with SDK 2.4.2

Here’s the version for device. It works smoothly on my Playdate with 2.4.2 firmware.
Makefile.zip (624 Bytes)
PlayDoom.pdx.zip (3.1 MB)
Don’t forget to place doom2.wad in the game’s data folder (PLAYDATE/Data/me.spazzylemons.PlayDoom) or the game will not run.

The only limit to Doom is one’s perseverance.
