Most of the dioramas in the Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History are light by bright stage lights, staged with precision behind wide, clear windows. But one corner of the hall is a diorama drenched in darkness. From a distance, visitors can’t quite tell what lurks in the shadows. Kids and adults alike creep warily forward, but even when they stand right at the threshold, it takes a minute for their eyes to adjust. Slowly, slowly the leviathan emerges from the shadows. Over 600 fathoms below the surface of the sea, where no light can penetrate, a sperm whale wars with a giant squid. Their battle, frozen in the murky ocean depths, is all the more startling because the is no window for this diorama. The only thing separating you from the whale and its prey is the darkness itself.
Dioramas come in all shapes and sizes. Some are meant to scientific presentations, some made for fun, and some are mad as artistic expression. Caroline Dewison, of A House of Wonders, has made a series of dioramas evoking the strange, silly, and sometimes haunting subject of alien abduction. Here’s more from COLOSSAL:
Hovering above minuscule streams and valleys, UFOs contrast sharply against Dewison’s hand-painted nature scenes. The artist has been fascinated by the possibility of beings on other planets since childhood and continues to explore this speculation.
