There’s something charming about a Mexican Coke. It comes in a glass bottle, with a paper label that proudly proclaims “made with cane sugar.” It’s nostalgic, almost as if it’s the way soda was always meant to be.
The much-maligned high fructose corn syrup is composed of glucose and fructose. Cane sugar should be made of pure sucrose. It therefore should be easy to test.
Reactions on YouTube goes about testing and researching the results. It turns out, because of chemistry, Mexican Coke isn’t necessarily a lie, but it is primarily sweetened by glucose and fructose. What accounts for the distinct taste? More salt
A 2011 paper found that Mexican Coke – which is supposed to be sweetened with cane sugar – contained no cane sugar. Instead, the paper found plenty of glucose and fructose: the main ingredients in high fructose corn syrup. Could Coke be lying to us all? Or is there another, even stranger explanation?
