On Friday, December 6th, fellow Adafruiter Noe and I had the opportunity to visit Boston College (BC) for Professor John Gallaugher‘s Student Tech Showcase. We were also joined by BC alum and maker Guy Dupont.

Motorized POV LED Display

Motorized POV LED Display

Build an LED display that creates an optical illusion. POV (Persistence of Vision) is an effect that occurs when the human eye continues to see an image after it has disappeared from view.

This project uses a motor to spin two strips of DotStar LEDs to achieve a POV effect.

The CircuitPython code converts a bitmap image to blink the DotStar LEDs when in motion, creating the POV effect.

Ladyada tasked Jepler with exploring the new libPIO for Raspberry Pi 5 computers: this gives us access to the RP1 chip so that we can run custom PIO state machines on the GPIO pins.
