Recalling Total Recall #SciFiSunday

Recalling the movie Total Recall by master of ironic social commentary Paul Verhoeven is also to recall remember the short story “We Can Remember it For You Wholesale” by master of non-ironic gnostic science fiction Philip K. Dick. By asking basic questions like “What is human?” and “How do I know what I think I know?” through the vocabulary of science fiction, Dick created short stories that will become ever-more relevant as human beings continue to become more online, more cybernetic, and more isolated from history. Paul Verhoeven, a Dutch filmmaker making movies in the United States, did much the same by asking a basic question like “What’s the deal with Americans?”

But how did Total Recall, a subversive, absurd, hilarious, disturbing movie, get made? There’s a book on that. Here’s more from Simon Braund via This Is Cool:

Publisher Titan Books has released the excellent Total Recall: The Official Story of the Film, a gorgeous 160-page hardback art book packed full of photographs, concept art and storyboards. This official retrospective takes you behind the scenes and tells the story of the making of Total Recall (1990). The book includes exclusive new interviews with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Paul Verhoeven, as well as other members of the crew, and features never seen before behind-the-scenes photography from the shoot.
