Lord of the Rings Inspired Cloak #WearableWednesday
Hobbits are sort of like J.R.R. Tolkien’s version of very chill rural English people. They don’t want to have to go fight in a world war, but by gum if they do, they will. Any self-respecting hobbit forced to venture out of their hobbit-hole for sure will bring their pipe and a traveling cloak. Maker donutsorelse has come up with a project for a glowing cape inspired by the ethereal blue glow emanating from Frodo’s blade Sting. Here’s more from hackster.io:
I combined a Lord of the Rings–inspired idea (like Sting’s “orc detection”) with modern IoT to create a weather-reactive cloak. This cloak lights up to show the forecast using an ESP32, a Notecard for cellular/cloud connection, and an addressable LED strip. It fetches data from OpenWeatherMap (via a Notehub route) to determine what the weather will be in about 15 minutes—then transitions the LEDs to different colors for clear skies, rain, drizzle, and more. The build involves setting up a proxy route, wiring the ESP32 and LED strip, and managing a small amount of code to parse weather data. My hope is this helps fellow makers tackle fun, wearable tech projects with a fantasy twist.
