Fixing an LG monitor multi-way control and power button
Luke Harris (like many of us – Ed.) has a 27″ LG monitor with a multi-way power button, a button that also controls the on screen display (OSD). And when one of these buttons malfunctions, it’s a head scratcher. Luke goes through the process of repairing it.
The power button on my LG 27UL500-W is a 4-direction control stick with a center push action for power functions and navigating the OSD. The center push action had always felt stiffer than on my other monitor and sometimes it wouldn’t register, but a stronger repeat push made it work. Until Thursday, that is.
The disassembly revealed the button above. Getting that apart revealed a wonky soldering iron. A new Pinecil V2 provided the heat to get the unit apart and determine the button had sustained oxidation, likely before purchase, causing the issues.
