An asteroid could hit Earth in 7 years. Here’s how astronomers are tracking it
Asteroid 2024 YR4 is a near-Earth asteroid: an asteroid in an orbit that brings it into Earth’s region of the Solar System. 2024 YR4 is estimated to be about 130 to 300 feet (40 – 90 meters) wide.
The chances currently stand at 3.1%. Astronomers stress that as they refine orbital calculations for 2024 YR4, the odds are likely to change.
Such objects are tracked by the NASA JPL Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). Their SENTRY Program follows all such objects. The data for 2024 YR4 can be found here.
