If you’ve ever taken a film class, one of the first things you learn is Mise-en-scène. From the cars to the tableware, everything has its place in a film. But, so does fashion. While it’s sometimes overlooked, the fashion of a film can tell you the time period, the mood, hint at who might be a villain – so many things. It takes an understanding of what the theme and mood of both what the film and each individual scene is trying to convey to know what each character should (or shouldn’t) wear. Sandy Powell, award winning costume designer, knows exactly how to build a world through fashion and SCAD FASH is honoring her impact in Sandy Powell’s Dressing the Part: Costume Design for Film.
