While Paris will always provoke awe, wonder, and imagination, an often forgotten contributor of the Enlightenment period is Émilie Du Châtelet. More than Voltaire’s romantic partner, Émilie Du Châtelet was a aristocratic noblewoman who was educated in mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy who made a mark in scientific history by translating and annotating Newton’s Principia Mathematica among other works.
As part of Versailles: Science and Splendour, Émilie Du Châtelet’s contributions are celebrated with her handwritten and annotated translation of Newton’s Principia Mathematica on view.
