Gyroscope – The Quantified Self Health Dashboard

gyroscope-june-2016

I’ll be the first to admit that I am overwhelming myself with health data. It becomes stressful to have to go back and study exercise, sleep and other measurables for trends. I want a simple way to review my stats to note my progress. Checkout the new Gyroscope app. This is a simple interface that produces neat summaries based on scraping data from other applications. I let Gyroscope pull Apple Health Data, Runkeeper and Instagram data to help me piece together what a week of Me looks like.

Any app that is trying to appeal to such a broad audience is definitely going to be missing components. The parts that I was disappointed about were:

  • No swim data and limited display of cycling data.
  • Time Zone is not user configurable so it looks like I do all my running at 2:30am
  • RescueTime – There is a lot of emphasis on tracking your computer activity, but I have my limits of what I’m willing to track. I’m sure for some this will be a big help.
  • There is almost no customization. To look at a specific time periods or track blood glucose is not available yet.
  • I am tracking body fat, but it failed to show up through the Health App.

What I like about this app:

  • It’s really engaging. The beautiful combination of data, images and my own pictures makes me want to improve.
  • If you are a runner that wears a heart rate monitor they have some really helpful graphs.
  • If you track your sleep they have graphs for you!
  • It’s dead simple. This is the tradeoff for lack of customization. They followed KISS principles.
  • The gyrosco.pe website interface is just as good as the app.
