FitnessGenes – DNA Based Fitness and Nutrition Analysis

FitnessGenes is a home based DNA testing service geared towards athletic people. They are currently running a 30% discount on their mail based DNA analysis kit. The price of the kit is normally $199 and is presently $139. FitnessGenes provides a report on 41 different genes linked to athletic performance and health. Once the report is generated based on your mailed in saliva sample a customized training system is provided with weekly exercises and nutritional information.

I’ve just received the results from my own DNA test which had several surprise findings:

  • I do not have most of the endurance traits and would be better at strength / speed based activities. Oddly enough I’ve only been interested in endurance activities such as swimming, running and cycling.

  • I am an excellent coffee drinker! That part is not a surprise, but in this case it means I have two copies of A allele for the CYP1A2 gene. I can quickly metabolize coffee and not worry about being up all night.

  • I am lactose intolerant. Two copies of the C allele in the LCT gene suggest that I would not do well with lactose. I’ve been avoiding dairy for 12 years based on personal observations and am thrilled to have the confirmation.

  • My most significant endurance attribute is that I was lucky enough to have is the gift of fat burning. I can confirm this as I’ve been enjoying a ketogenic diet for all of 2016. I had two G alleles in the PPARA gene which is common in elite endurance athletes.
