e-Mosquito – Autonomous Biting Blood Glucose Monitor

A team at the University of Calgary has taken a queue from the mosquito and made a wrist based diabetic blood testing device. This autonomous tester will “bite” at set periods throughout the day taking blood sugar readings. Besides monitoring glucose levels this sort of technology could one day be used for DNA testing or cancer screening. Yes, that is an Adafruit OLED display.

Today, the prototype consists of two parts: a reusable watch-like top consisting of the battery, LED display, actuator and various other components, and a disposable bottom cartridge equipped with needle and test strip. The whole prototype is small enough to sit on the wrist and, more importantly, the penetrating needle reaches a capillary under the skin every single time, says Mintchev.
