Gammaphon – A Portable 16-Step Music Sequencer that Transforms Colors into Sounds

Big thanks to Felix for sending in this project! Felix writes:

my name is Felix and I’m a digital media student (B.A.) at the university of the arts in Bremen, Germany.

In a course last year with the topic ‘computation and music’ I’ve built the gammaphon. The gammaphon is a portable 16-step music sequencer with 4 different tracks ( kick, hihat, snare and synth) which makes it possible to transform colors into sounds using a color sensor. But instead of using ordinary audio samples the sounds are synthesized from the RGB values given by the sensor. So there are more than 16.7 million different sounds available for each track. As you can see, the main ingredient for my user interface is the 8mm NEOPIXEL led for visualizing the scanned colors. As ‘master brain’ I’ve used a teensy 3.2 by PJRC, because it suited all my
needs:

  • powerful but small
  • handy audio shield with headphone output and 16-Bit DAC
  • extensive audio library for sound synthesis

Stop breadboarding and soldering – start making immediately! Adafruit’s Circuit Playground is jam-packed with LEDs, sensors, buttons, alligator clip pads and more. Build projects with Circuit Playground in a few minutes with the drag-and-drop MakeCode programming site, learn computer science using the CS Discoveries class on code.org, jump into CircuitPython to learn Python and hardware together, TinyGO, or even use the Arduino IDE. Circuit Playground Express is the newest and best Circuit Playground board, with support for CircuitPython, MakeCode, and Arduino. It has a powerful processor, 10 NeoPixels, mini speaker, InfraRed receive and transmit, two buttons, a switch, 14 alligator clip pads, and lots of sensors: capacitive touch, IR proximity, temperature, light, motion and sound. A whole wide world of electronics and coding is waiting for you, and it fits in the palm of your hand.
