Jacqueline Woodson – Black History Month 2021 #BlackHistoryMonth

Adafruit BHM2021 blog 2

Today we celebrate one of the most important voices writing today, Jacqueline Woodson. She’s received a number of honors throughout her career, including being named a MacArthur Fellow last year, and the Newbery Medal (more than once). While she’s known mostly for her work in children’s literature and YA, Woodson has also published two novels for adults, including her 2016 novel Another Brooklyn, which was nominated for the National Book Award for Fiction in 2016. Brown Girl Dreaming is a must read is an absolute must read as well.

The New York Times profiled Woodson back in 2019, we recommend giving it a read. And, of course, buy her work at your local bookstore!

Woodson is a prolific author of books for children and young adults, and at the time, she was at work on a few different projects. One was “Brown Girl Dreaming,” a memoir in verse that would win the 2014 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. But there was also an impressionistic adult novel, “Another Brooklyn,” in which a woman, unable to confront her mother’s death, recalls her childhood in the Bushwick of the 1970s, when the area was undergoing white flight instead of the more recent outflux of black and Latinx residents. That one would become a finalist for the 2016 National Book Award for Fiction.
