Vulkan Compute – getting to a minimal example #GPU #Compute @BramStolk
Vulkan is a new generation graphics and compute API that provides high-efficiency, cross-platform access to modern GPUs used in a wide variety of devices from PCs and consoles to mobile phones and embedded platforms. The Khronos Group is a member-driven consortium that created and maintains Vulkan.
Bram Stolk, working on Photon Mapping experiments had gone from CUDA to OpenCL (for better compatibility) and then to Vulkan for even better compatibility. OpenCL was not cutting it anymore: abandoned by Apple, ignored by AMD. He found out when trying to use OpenCL on a mobile Ryzen iGPU under Linux, it didn’t work.
Vulkan can be intimidating: a lot of code must be generated just to set up an environment let alone do anything.
So Bram has created MinimalVulkanCompute, the minimal code to do Vulkan compute. It shows how to setup Vulkan to compute something on a GPU.
