The tunes of San Francisco are being recorded by Bop Spotter #ArtTuesday
Riley Walz has created an interesting project. Called Bop Spotter, it’s installed in the Mission District of San Francisco.
On an undisclosed pole, a box contains an Android phone and a solar circuit to charge it. The device uses the Shazam app to determine any song it hears and sends that information back for display on a web site.
The author states:
This is cultural surveillance. No one notices, no one consents. But it;s not about catching criminals. It’s about catching vibes. A constant feed of what’s popping off in real-time.
As of this post, there have been 387 Shazams detected. That’s an average of 134.6 songs per day.
